When and where is the Pierce County AIDS Walk?

The Walk is Saturday, September 28th at Kandle Park in North Tacoma. Registration begins at 9:00 am and the Walk opening ceremony kicks off at 10:30 am. For directions, please call (253) 383-2565.

How long is the Walk?

The Walk is a relatively flat 4.9 miles in beautiful and historic North Tacoma. There is a water stop half way through the route.

What will be happening at Kandle park the day of the Walk?

A continental breakfast and barbecue lunch will be provided courtesy of Queen Anne Thriftway. The Walk opening ceremony, beginning at 10:30 am, will include brief comments from our executive director, honorary chairperson, and special guests to start off the Walk. Local musicians, courtesy of Victory Music, will be performing throughout the day. Memorial tiles will be on display, and you will have the opportunity to create a ribbon in honor of someone affected by HIV/AIDS to carry on the Walk. Information booths from sponsoring businesses and local organizations will be set up throughout the park. After the Walk, be sure to come back to the park for lunch and prizes.

What can I do to get involved?

There are so many great ways to get involved in this important event!

1.  WALK! The most important thing you can do to help out is to join the 1,200 other walkers supporting AIDS service and education. Raise money by getting friends, family, and local businesses to sponsor you. Register online or call to receive a Walk packet with information and fundraising tips to help you be successful. You will also receive regular Walk updates with more ideas. Get creative and raise money for a great cause!

2.  FORM A TEAM! Teams raised 70% of all the money raised in the Walk last year!  It's amazing what a few like-minded individuals can do when they pool their creativity and resources. Teams are also eligible for special team prizes and incentives, a free team photo taken on the day of the Walk, and trainings and special events before the Walk. We’re here to help you with tips and materials every step of the way! Teams can be made up of all sorts of groups, such as:

          Businesses and corporations

       Non-profit / public service organizations

          Groups of friends

          Family members

          Fraternities and sororities

          Schools

          Clubs

          College dorms

          Faith-based groups

          Youth groups

          Professional organizations

          Memorials and tributes

3.  VOLUNTEER! It takes about 200 volunteers to put on the AIDS Walk every year, both before and during the event. Please call the volunteer coordinator at (253) 383-2565 or email [email protected]  to find out more about being a volunteer.

4.  HELP PROMOTE THE WALK!  Beautiful, full-color Walk posters and plenty of brochures are available.  Consider taking some to places you frequent:  businesses, places of worship, clubs…where can you think of to take them???

Do I have to raise money in order to walk?

Since the purpose of the Walk is to raise money, our goal is for every walker to raise at least $100. We have plenty of ideas to help you easily reach the $100 goal; just give us a call at the office. But community support is also very important, and we welcome all who wish to walk whether they raise money or not.

Is there a registration fee for the walk?

There is no registration fee for the Walk.

Where do the proceeds from the walk go?

Proceeds from the Walk are used to continue vital services provided by the Pierce County AIDS Foundation, such as case management, prevention and education programs, food and hygiene bags for those in need, housing assistance, and support groups. In addition, $10,000 of the proceeds from the Walk are redistributed to other agencies providing HIV/AIDS services in Pierce County. This year's recipients include the AIDS Housing Association of Tacoma, Tacoma Urban League, Planned Parenthood, NW Reach,  Red Cross, Bridges: Center for Grieving Children, and Community Health Care.

Do I have to pre-register?

Registration will be available at Kandle Park the day of the Walk, but we encourage everyone to pre-register as early as possible to be sure there is plenty of food and to speed up on site registration. In addition to making our planning and record-keeping much more efficient and accurate, it will also allow you to receive Walk updates, additional fundraising tips, and information about trainings and events. You can pre-register one of three ways:

1. Click HERE to register online.

2. Call us during business hours at (253) 383-2565 and register over the phone!

3. Pick up a Walk flyer at Queen Anne Thriftway, any branch of the Tacoma or Pierce County Library systems, any Group Health Clinic, or any Multicare clinic. Return the completed form to: PCAF, 625 Commerce St. Suite 10, Tacoma, WA 98402 or fax it to (253) 597-6682.

Is the walk accessible to those with special needs?

Every effort has been made to make the Walk accessible for all who wish to walk. Not all curbs are curb-cut for wheelchair/stroller access, but there will be volunteers available at sites that are not curb-cut for those who need assistance. There will be handicap parking and restroom facilities available, and the Walk program will be interpreted for the deaf. If you have questions about accessibility, please call us at (253) 383-2565.

Do I have to be in good physical shape in order to walk?

No! There is no time limit, the course is relatively flat and can be taken at any pace you wish. If you become tired or need assistance, there will be vans available to pick you up and take you back to the park.

Will there be parking available?

A limited amount of parking will be available, including some street parking. We encourage walkers to carpool and utilize public transit if possible. Some handicap parking will also be available near the Walk site.

Will my company match my donation to the Walk?

Many companies do!  Check the list here, but even if you don’t see your company’s name, check with them anyway.  Maybe we missed getting them on our list or maybe they haven’t in the past, but would this year.

Who should checks be made out to?

Checks should be made out to Pierce County AIDS Foundation, or PCAF. Please write "Walk" on the memo line.

Will receipts be given to sponsors?

Thank-you letters with tax-deductible information will be given to sponsors who give $25 or more, provided they write their complete address on the pledge form.

I don't have all my pledge money with me - where can I send it after the Walk?

Pledge money can be mailed to: Pierce County AIDS Walk, 625 Commerce St. # 10, Tacoma, WA 98402. Remember, benefiting agencies are depending on this money, so please send your pledge money in as soon as possible.

Are the Walk incentives available to purchase?

Most of the Walk incentives will be available to purchase, depending on availability.  The incentive earned by top fundraisers will not be for sale, but will be exclusively for walkers who raise $1,000.

What if I have a question that is not answered here?

Just give us a call at 383-2565.  You can also email us at [email protected]. We’re happy to answer any questions you might have, and help you to be successful!

What is a team?

A team is a group of two or more people who choose to walk together and work together in raising money. Some are walking together in memory of a certain person, some are co-workers, some friends or family. Anyone can form a team. Please call us at (253) 383-2565 for more information on team building, registering as a team, fundraising tips, special trainings and events, and more!

Why form a team?

There are many reasons to form a team to walk in the AIDS Walk!

1.     Teams raised 2/3 of all the money raised last year—that’s about $60,000!

2.     For businesses and organizations, walking as a team increases visibility and demonstrates to the community that you care about the growing number of people in out community who are affected by HIV/AIDS.

3.     Forming a team promotes staff morale and helps to build teamwork among staff members.

4.     Forming a team is an effective and tangible way to honor the memory of loved ones who have been affected by HIV/AIDS.

5.     Team members are eligible for special awards and prizes as well as individual prizes. Each team will have a free team photo taken at the Walk.

6.     It is much easier, more fun, and definitely more effective to raise money when there are several people pooling their resources, creativity, and talents.

7.     This year, more than ever, we are counting on teams and individual walkers to help make up the shortfall in sponsorship dollars we have experienced due to current economic challenges.

How do I form a team?

Start out by registering as a team captain, either by registering online, filling out a registration form, or giving us a call at (253) 383-2565. Then start recruiting members for your team. We'll send you additional information about recruiting and fundraising as well as information about team leader trainings and special events.

What kind of groups form teams?

Anyone can form a team! Some common teams include:

          Businesses and corporations

       Non-profit / public service organizations

          Groups of friends

          Family members

          Faith-based groups

          Schools

          Clubs

          College dorms, fraternities, sororities

          Youth groups

          Professional organizations

          Memorials and tributes

Political parties, advocacy groups, or campaigns

What resources are available to me as a team captain?

We want you to succeed as a team captain, so we have many different resources available to help make a great team. Go online to download a packet of information on team-building and fundraising. You will also receive regular team captain updates from the Walk coordinators, and an invitation to a special team captain reception hosted by our honorary Walk chair, Diane Lachel of Click! Network. You are welcome to call the Walk staff at (253) 383-2565 if you have any questions, or need ideas or information, and may also access our HIV/AIDS resource library at the foundation. Finally, there is lots of information about Pierce County AIDS Foundation the Walk on our website, www.piercecountyaids.org.

How can I promote the AIDS Walk at my company or business to make our team more successful?

ü     Form a Team committee and enlist co-leaders to help get the word out to more people.

ü     Put up point-of-purchase stands and posters (in cafeterias, restrooms, elevators, etc.).

ü     Hold an AIDS Awareness Day with an AIDS Walk registration table.

ü      Have an AIDS Walk kick-off luncheon/potluck.

ü     Ask senior management to support the team and write a personal appeal to all staff, encouraging participation.

ü     Send out sign-up reminders and encouragement through follow-up memos, email/voicemail notification or your organization’s newsletter.

ü     FOLLOW UP, FOLLOW UP, FOLLOW UP with your team about fundraising goals and efforts.

ü     Post a current team roster along with a sign asking people to join the team or sponsor a walker.

Can our team carry a sign or banner?

YES!  We welcome teams to carry signs, wear team T-shirts, and other creative ways of showing your unity and support.

If someone registered for the AIDS Walk as an individual, can they still join our team?
Pre-registered walkers can still be part of your team. Simply call the AIDS Walk office with the walker's name, address & phone number and ask for them to be transferred to your team.

How can my team raise money?

We suggest trying one or more of the following fundraising ideas

·        Investigate your company’s matching gift program.

·        Your company can support the team fiscally through direct support (a donation to the team) or by awarding money to walkers in either a set amount per walker or on a matching basis.

·        If your business has offices in other cities, ask those locations to sponsor your walkers.

·        Offer prizes or incentives for top walkers, such as theater or baseball tickets, a day off with pay, a free lunch or dress-down privileges.

·        Sell AIDS awareness ribbons or AIDS Walk T-shirts. Or, if you do not want to sell your T-shirts, require walkers to raise a specific amount of money before they qualify for a free T-shirt.

·        Many teams raise extra money by holding bake sales or potluck lunches.

·        Remember -- anyone can join your team. Encourage your co-workers/members to register family and friends as part of your team. Invite vendors, clients, and customers to raise money and walk on your team. If you work in a building with a number of small companies that do not have teams, invite their employees to join yours.
